Strategic Optical Store Design: Bill Gerber Featured in Optical Prism Magazine
Published in: Optical Prism Magazine (September 2026 Issue) | Author: Amanpreet Dhami
Modern optical patients no longer want to shop in sterile, clinical environments. As retail expectations shift, independent eye care practices face a unique challenge: balancing high-level healthcare with an inviting, luxury retail experience.
In the September 2026 feature story of Optical Prism, titled “Designed to Connect,” author Amanpreet Dhami sat down with Bill Gerber, CEO of OMG Optical Marketing Group, to discuss how strategic store layout, open-sell displays, and hospitality-inspired touchpoints drive optical sales and patient retention.
Blending Clinical Excellence with Luxury Retail Merchandising
Creating a high-performing optical space requires looking beyond basic frame displays. The physical environment acts as an immediate visual cue for the quality of care a patient expects to receive.
When designing high-converting optical spaces, merchandising must align with the practice’s brand story.
“When it comes to optical store design, the display needs to be a seamless extension of the overall practice.”
— Bill Gerber, CEO of OMG
Instead of overcrowding shelves with competing brand logos, effective optical merchandising creates balance, making frame offerings clear from the exterior while maintaining a clean, curated atmosphere inside.
The 3-Stage Patient Experience Framework
In the feature, Gerber outlines a three-stage framework designed to transform a standard optical appointment into a high-end personal styling session:
- 1. Pre-Visit Engagement: Utilizing digital style questionnaires before the appointment allows opticians to prepare curated frame trays in advance, transforming routine shopping into a personalized styling consultation.
- 2. In-Practice Hospitality: Replacing rigid reception desks with welcoming lounge seating, refreshment bars, and dedicated styling alcoves puts patients at ease and elevates the purchase experience.
- 3. Post-Visit Continuity: Extending the relationship beyond frame pickup through proactive visual comfort check-ins, complimentary adjustments, and seasonal styling recommendations.
Removing Friction: The Power of Open-Sell Displays
One of the largest hurdles in optical sales is physical friction. Traditional locked cases force patients to ask for permission to hold frames, lowering engagement and delaying buying decisions.
“Remove physical barriers that allow patients to touch, try on and connect with product immediately.”
— Bill Gerber
Inspired by luxury beauty boutiques, open-sell frame displays and optimal store lighting encourage immediate tactile exploration. When patients can interact with eyewear freely, buying confidence and average order value naturally increase.
Client Spotlight: Reimagining Optical Retail at Urban Optics
The Optical Prism feature highlights Urban Optics, an OMG client project that reimagines the classic library aesthetic into a modern, hospitality-driven eyewear space.
By pairing custom woodwork, statement lighting, and accessible display walls, Urban Optics creates an inviting atmosphere that encourages browsing and drives revenue.
